Electric Current with Temperature Variation Arising from Polymer-Metal Contacts

An appreciable short-circuit current is observed during heating and cooling from various kinds of polymer films sandwiched between aluminum and gold. The polymers are classified within the experimental temperature region into two groups. For one group, the current depends basically on temperature itself and is ascribed to the electrochemical reaction at the metal electrodes. For the other group, the current is caused by the time variation of temperature and is transient in nature, probably due to the electronic process around the metal-polymer interface. Polyethyleneterephthalate film belongs to the latter group below the nearby glass transition temperature, but to the former above that temperature.
