An Analysis of Various Properties of Surface Discharge Using a Transmission-Line Model

A transmission-line model for surface discharge and the analytical solution of the model have been presented previously. In this paper, an attempt is made to interpret the various properties of surface discharge with this model. The properties discussed are the discharge starting voltage vs the specific capacitance; the propagation length vs the voltage application time; the applied voltage vs the advancing length; and the charge quantity vs the advancing length. It is shown that the analytical relations can explain the qualitative features of published experimental data comparatively well. Because of the lack of fully systematic measurements as well as assumptions contained in the model, however, a detailed quantitative comparison has been left for solution in the future.
