Short-Circuit Current Induced by Temperature Change from M_1-Polyethyleneterephthalate-M_2 System below Glass Transition Temperature

A current has been found to be induced under the short-circuit condition by heating or cooling the M_1-PET-M_2 system consisting of an untreated polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) film. The current is reversed when the direction of temperature variation is changed. Its magnitude increases as the thickness of PET is decreased and as the heating rate is raised. During heating, the current flows in the direction from the electrode having a lower work function to the counter electrode or in the opposite direction, according to whether the two .metals both have larger work functions than that of PET or not. Possible processes associated with the electron transfer near the contacts arc discussed.
