Metal-semiconductor transition with anomalous thermal hysteresis observed in hexagonal (Ni1-xFex)1-yS, (0.LEQ.x.LEQ.0.30, 0.LEQ.y.LEQ.0.035).

The phase relation of (Ni<SUB>1−<I>x</I></SUB>Fe<I><SUB>x</SUB></I>)<SUB>1−<I>y</I></SUB>S system was determined by the X-ray powder diffraction method. Fe<SUB>1−<I>y</I></SUB>S can be dissolved in Ni<SUB>1−<I>y</I></SUB>S in <I>ca.</I> 30 at.%. Transition temperature (<I>T<SUB>t</SUB></I>) was measured mainly by the DSC method. <I>T<SUB>t</SUB></I> increases with increase in Fe contents. <I>T<SUB>t</SUB></I> in the forward direction, however, shows a significant increase as high as 50 degrees, when specimens are aged at a temperature below <I>T<SUB>t</SUB></I>. The reverse transformation is not affected by thermal hystory at all. This is explained by the relaxation process in which the strain energy stored in the low temperature phase is relieved by aging.
