Morphological changes of acute rejection vascularized growth plate allografts in the rat.

Using a genetically defined rat model, light and electromicroscopic examinations of acute rejection in vascularized allografts of growth plate were carried out. Vascularized allografts that were transplanted across a weak histocompatibility barrier showed gradual, less intense process of rejection than that transplanted across a strong histocompatibility barrier, so that these grafts allowed observation of the evolution of the process. In these grafts, the osteoclasts in the primary spongiosa of the metaphysis were early targets of rejection and loss of osteoclasts resulted in the cessation of resorbing the calcified cartilage. However, the proliferation and maturation of chondrocytes in the zone of proliferating chondrocyte and in the upper hypertrophic zone continued and resulted in the formation of a thickened calcified cartilage of the growth plate.
