The effect of Ara-A on collagen arthritis in rats was investigated following parenteral administration of this drug at a dose of 100mg/kg/day for 25 days starting the day before type II collagen immunization.Ara-A significantly increased the incidence and severity of collagen arthritis compaired to control rats which recieved dimethyl-sulphoxide (DMSO), vehicle used to dissolve Ara-A. While serum antibody titers to type II collagen measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responces did not show critical increase.These data extend the previous finding that Ara-A, an antiviral chemotherapeutic agent, also stimulates murine immune response to several well defined antigens.
