Diagnosis of tuberculosis of the hand.

Eleven cases of tuberculosis and 6 cases of chronic non-specific inflammation of the hand are presented. In order to elicit characteristics of tuberculosis of the hand, comparison was made between both groups in terms of clinical data, preoperative diagnosis, operative and histological findings. Five patients of tuberculosis had a preoperative diagnosis of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath or other tumor, and operative findings of 6 patients revealed a mass lesion in some area.These findings suggest that a mass lesion in some area may be a diagnostic hallmark of tuberculosis of the hand. Also, a history of trauma of the hand or a history of previous tuberculous disease should raise suspicions of tuberculosis. Even if bacteriological or histological examinations do not reveal findings of tuberculosis, possibility of tuberculosis should not be excluded.
