In order to detect morphological factors indicative of degenerative changes of the lunate, anatomical and radiological studies were performed using forty-nine wrist joints in 25 cadavers. Degenerative changes of the lunate were seen in 22 joints (81.8%), and most commonly these changes were seen in the proximal ulnar area of the lunate. In wrists with degenerative changes, ulnar variance was significantly greater (P<0.01), lunate covering ratio was significantly lower (P<0.05) and TFC tear was seen more frequently (P<0.001) than in wrists without degenerative changes.We concluded that morphological factors for degenerative changes in the proximal ulnar area of the lunate include ulnar variance, lunate covering ratio and TFC tear.
