Rapid water temperature descent observed during the season of overall warming trends at Uragami Bay.

In order to study the rapid temperature descent observed from the end of spring until autumn in Uragami Bay along the east coast of the Kii Penninsula, daily surface temperature data was taken during the four seasons in 1983-86 near the fish cultivation ground. These figures, along with temperature measurements from each level of the fish cultivation construction, were then analyzed. Possible effects of this rapid temperature descent on the feeding of young cultured yellowtail Seriora quinqueradiata (Temminck et Schlegel) were also discussed. The rapid temperature descent during the season of overall warming trends which occurs around the Kii Penninsula is caused by coastal upwellings and results in the cold water intrusion of the bottom layer. We have made it clear that the change influences the feeding amount of cultured yellowtail.
