Prostaglandin (PG) E2, thromboxane (TX) B2 and 6-keto-PGF1α in the culture media of the colonic mucosa specimens obtained from patients with inflammatory bowel disease were measured by radioimmunoassays.In active stage of ulcerative colitis, PGE2, TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1α production were significantly higher than those in remission. The ratio of 6-keto-PGF1α to TXB2 in active stage was significantly reduced than that in remission. Furthermore, similar tendencies were recognized in the patients whose courses were observed from active stage to remission.In active Crohn's disease, PGE2 production was higher than that of normal subjects. However, there were no significant differences in other products between patients with Crohn's disease and normal subjects.These results suggest that PGE2, TXA2 and PGI2 act respectively as one of the chemical mediators of inflammation in ulcerative colitis.
