:With Special Reference to the Relationship between PG I and PG II Levels

PG I and PG II levels were determined by RIA in endoscopically diagnosed 214 normal controls, 183 peptic ulcer cases and 114 patients with various disorders. Serum total pepsinogen (T-PG) levels in normal controls was 58.9∗31.7, μg/l(meanμS.D.), and percentage of PG I in TPG (% PG I) was about 75%. Correlation between serum PG I and PG II levels in normal controls was statistically significant (r=0.531, p <0.001).Peptic ulcer cases had elevated T-PG levels than that of normal controls, in the order of increasing magnitude, gastric ulcer (70.3±36.3), gastroduodenal ulcer (75.7±20.5) and duodenal ulcer (79.0±40.4).T-PG levels were not sufficiently potent for the diagnosis of peptic ulcer cases, but were useful for the serological screening of the high-risk group of them. The simultaneous assay of both PG I and PG II levels in the same sera may be of value in resolving the pathophysiological and clinical meanings of pepsin-pepsinogen in the disorders with gastrointestinal tract.
