Ultrastructural study of the interaction between lymphocytes and hepatocytes in type B chronic active hepatitis patients.

Interaction between lymphocytes and hepatocytes were investigated in the liver biopsy specimens taken from fifteen patients with type B chronic active hepatitis under electron microscopy. Interaction was noted between lymphocytes and hepatocytes where these two types of cells were in a close contact without intervening endothelial cells. The microvilli on the surface of the hepatocytes which were in contact with lymphocytes were degenerated and lost. In some area the cytoplasmic projections of the lymphocyte had direct contact with microvilli of the hepatic cell surface through the sinusoidal fenestrae of endothelial cells. We think that it shows the phenomenon of interaction in the early stage and later close contact is established between lymphocytes and hepatocytes without intervening endothelial cells.
