Evaluation of BrdU labeling index as a prognostic factor of hepatocellular carcinoma.

In order to study the relationship between prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and DNA synthetic potency of HCC and LC, BrdU labeling indices of cancerous and non-cancerous portion in 14 hepatectomised cases were examined, using an in vitro immunostaining technique, and followed up for more than 2 years after hepatectomy. The results were as followed: 1) BrdU L.I. of cancerous and non-cancerous portion were 6.43±0.89% (Mean±SE) and 2.85±0.42%, respectively. There was a significant positive correlationship between L.I. of cancerous and non-cancerous portion. 2) There was a negative correlationship between L.I. of cancerous ponion and the periods of survival time. There was also a negative correlationship between L.I. of non-cancerous portion and survival time, which means that HCC patients with LC in whom L.I. are low could obtain good prognosis. 3) It was demonstrated that BrdU L.I. of both HCC cells and background hepatocytes of liver cirrhosis was a useful prognostic factor in hepatocellular carcinoma.
