A case of intrapelvic abscess simulating submucosal tumor of colon in childhood.

A case of intrapelvic abscess with radiographic and endoscopic findings simulating submucosal tumor of the colon is reported. The patient was a 13-year-old female, presenting abdominal pain, abdominal tumor, diarrhea and febrile symptoms, and contrast radiography of the colon revealed localized stenosis of the lumen in the sigmoid colon, appearing like an apple core. Endoscopy of the colon revealed a projecting change like a protuberance, rising sharply into the lumen, with slight reddening and edema on the surface mucous membrane. Based on the results of contrast radiography, endoscopy of the colon, etc. a submucosal malignant tumor was suspected and laparotomy was performed, which revealed the sigmoid colon which was compressed and stenosed by an intrapelivc abscess, caused by adnexitis. We emphasize that a lesion outside the colonic wall, such as in this case may produce variegated features of contrast radiography and endoscopy of the colon.
