P48. Effect of Ultrasonic Power on Characteristics of Produced Polymer Particles in Separate-type Ultrasonic Irradiation Systems(Poster Presentation)

In our previous studies for suspension polymerization by using ultrasonic irradiation, production of particles with large diameter has been observed. A purpose of this study is to investigate effect of ultrasonic power on characteristics of particles which are produced in suspension polymerization of styrene. Frequency of ultrasound is 20 kHz, and thus the separate-type ultrasonic irradiation system is used to control thermal effect of ultrasound on polymerization. When ultrasonic power is 60 W, we observe that the mean size of produced particles is larger than other conditions for the power. Moreover, it is observed that apparent density of particle is higher. There is frequently seen a little adhesion of minute particles to large particles. Therefore, it is considered that influence of ultrasonic energy to coalescence and break-up of droplets in polymerization changes nonlinearly with increase in the ultrasonic power.
