Phosphine complexes of silylrutheniumhydrides of types [RuH<SUB>3</SUB>(SiR<SUB>3</SUB>)(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>] (where R<SUB>3</SUB>Si=Et<SUB>3</SUB>Si, Me<SUB>2</SUB>PhSi, and (MeO)<SUB>3</SUB>Si) and [RuH(SiR<SUB>3</SUB>)(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>] (where R<SUB>3</SUB>Si=Cl<SUB>2</SUB>MeSi and (MeO)<SUB>3</SUB>Si) were found to be much more effective catalysts for the addition of carbon tetrachloride to 1-octene than RuCl<SUB>2</SUB>(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB> or RuH<SUB>2</SUB>(PPh<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>.
