Authors carried out a series of experiments to realize the correlation between the subjective assessment on the traffic environments for ship handling and the frequency of encounter among ships, which was calculated from the traffic data obtained by Radar traffic survey and also one of the objective index on the degree of the difficulties of ship handling under the given traffic environment. The view from the navigation bridge was recorded by three video cameras which were set up on the ferry boat navigating across Akasi Seto. The traffic situation around her was also observed by a shorebased Radar. 13 scenes of ship's encounter were selected from the recorded view from the bridge. They were projected in front of two groupes of 10 pilots and 10 skippers, separately, who evaluated the degree of difficulties on ship handling and the necessity of collision avoidance manoeuvre on each scene of them. According to the experimental results, there were well correlations between subjective assessment on the traffic situation and objective index on the ship's encounter, that is, this index was quite useful for assessment of the degree of difficulties of ship handling in the given traffic situations.
