CD56-Positive Subcutaneous Panniculitis-like T-cell Lymphoma

A 65-year old woman developed CD56-positive subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma. In July 1997, erythema with ambiguous boundaries and subcutaneous induration appeared inside the right femur. According to the histological findings, a large number of histiocytes and bean back cells were present in mixed form from the lower layer of the dermis to the subcutaneous adipose tissue, indicating cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis, which disappeared spontaneously. Three months later, a tumor appeared in the right lumbar region, and histiocytes, atypical lymphocytes, and bean back cells were observed in the subcutaneous adipose tissue. The tumor cells were CD56-positive. A diagnosis of CD56-positive subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma was thus established. With respect to the Epstein-Barr (EB) virus, the PCR method and the in-situ hybridization method were conducted for EB virus-encoded small RNA (EBER) and the Southern Blot method for EB virus terminal repeat. The results were negative for the EB virus. In addition, EB-virus-negative, CD56-positive subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma is also discussed here based on the literature.
