Objective : Inverted papilloma (IP) of the urinary tract is generally treated as a benign neoplasm. Some IPs coexist with urothelial cancer (UC) lesions in the same tumor, and some are thought to have a malignant potential. This study evaluates the proliferative activity of inverted urothelial tumors. Materials and Methods : Histopathological reviews and immunohistochemical examinations (p53, Ki-67, cyclin D1, and erbB-2) were evaluated in 9 urothelial inverted tumors. Original diagnoses of these were IP in 8 and inverted-UC in 1. Results : Concurrence of a UC lesion was recognized within the same tumor in 2 cases originally diagnosed as benign IPs. Mitosis and cellular atypia were significant in UC lesions and large IPs. Remarkable p53 immunoreactivity was recognized in the UC lesion. Positive rates of Ki-67 stained cells were higher in UC lesions compared with benign tumors. Slight expression of cyclin D1 was recognized in UCs and large ureteral IPs. Conclusions : Probable frequency rates of the coexistence of UC lesions in IPs were recognized by minute review in this small study group. Immunohistochemical examinations for cell proliferation markers, especially Ki-67 and p53 are helpful to discover malignant lesions within inverted urothelial tumors.
