Bending and twisting deflections of pinion with numbers of teeth Z_1=2 to 4 were obtained by experiments and numerical calculations. They were rearranged and shown in terms of a dimensionless parameter for the sake of easiness in the design of gear pairs with a small number of pinion teeth. For a gear pair with Z_1=3,the load carrying capacity of the gear pair with tooth-trace correction based on the elastic deflections of pinion was compared with that of a gear pair with no tooth-trace correction. The pitting area ratio after 20×10^6 rotations of the pinion was appreciably smaller in the case of the former gear pair. Calculated results for the optimum design of gear pairs with Z_1=4 were shown in the figures. In order to clarify the effectiveness of the optimum design, three kinds of gear pairs with different tooth shapes were tested using a load-carrying capacity testing machine designed by the authors. The power transmission efficiency at the contacting tooth surfaces of the gear pairs with Z_1=4 and Z_2=36 was about 96%. The corresponding friction coefficient at the tooth surface was about 0.06.
