Immunohistochemical Study with a Monoclonal Antibody against Gamma Seminoprotein for Identification of Bone Metastasis from Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate

The role of monoclonal antibody (MoAb) against gamma seminoprotein (γ-Sm) for identifying bone metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the prostate was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The bone and prostate tissues of 12 autopsies with prostatic cancer, chosen from the autopsy file at random, were examined. Ten of 12 patients had bone metastases of adenocarcinoma (3) or small-cell carcinoma (1) of the prostate and malignant neoplasms other than prostatic cancer (6). The immunoperoxidase staining with MoAb to γ-Sm excluded 7 of 7 bone metastases from malignant neoplasms other than adenocarcinoma of the prostate. Two of the 3 bone metastases from adenocarcinoma of the prostate gave positive staining, although the remainder with long (14 hours) post mortem interval gave negative staining. The MoAb may have an important role for indentification of bone metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the prostate in the immunohistochemical study. The post mortem interval seems to affect the intensity of immunostaining with this MoAb.
