In this study, we have attempted to determine the optimum length of time for application of an electric current to achieve permanent removal of rat vibrissae. Further, we have also examined the histological changes that occur in vibrissal follicles due to electrolysis. It was found that 4 sec of thermolysis and 30 sec of the blend were most appropriate for permanent removal of rat vibrissae. Both of the time length were from two to three times longer than those for electrolysis of human hair. In the follicles in which permanent vibrissae removal was achieved by electrolysis, it was found that dermal papilla and matrix were still present but deformed, and also that epithelial cysts which showed no hair-regrowth capability were formed in the follicle.
