The Feasibility of Altering the Hair Cycle via the Induction of Apoptosis by Cyclosporin A

Since cyclosporin A (CsA) is effective against alopecia areata, which is regarded as an autoimmune disease, reports on the mechanism of hair growth promotion by CsA have focused on its main action, i. e., immune suppression. However, hypertrichosis has been noted as a side effect of CsA, and the drug is also effective against male-pattern alopecia, which is attributed to androgenic hormone metabolism. Thus, the mechanism of hair growth promotion by CsA cannot be explained solely by immune suppression. Accordingly, we turned our attention to another action of CsA reported in recent years, i. e., induction of apoptosis, to analyze the mechanism of hair growth promotion by the drug. While apoptosis has been suggested to occur during the process of retraction of hair follicles, we detected CsA-induced apoptosis during the anagen, when hair follicles are newly generated. These findings suggest that CsA induces apoptosis and shifts the hair cycle from telogen to anagen, thereby promoting hair growth.
