• The energy counting rate of acoustic emission is measured as a function of energizing current for two pancake wound coils -the 16.5 T superconducting magnet and the superconducting part of 31 T hybrid magnet (SM-1). The pattern of the AE rate varies with the structural change, particularly the change of the axial precompression of the coil. We also observed the abrupt increase of the AE rate of SM-1 just prior to a coil quench. On the basis of these measurements, the usefulness of the AE technique to detect the structural change and to predict the coil quench is discussed.
