Temperature Dependence of Magneto-Optical Effects in Nickel Thin Films

The Faraday rotation and magnetic circular dichroism in thin films of ferrornagneticnickel are measured with He-Ne Baser light (,%= 632.8 nm) up to a temperature slightlyabove the Curie point T.. The results near T. can satisfactorily be analyzed on theassumption that the magneto-optical parameters Q. and Q. are proportional to themagnetization, regardless of whether the magnetization is spontaneous or induced byapplied fields. Slight deviations from the proportionality are found at lower tempera-tures; temperature coefficients of both Q. and Q. are somewhat larger than those of thespontaneous magnetization.
