Studies of an Impulse Breakdown Process in an Atmospheric Air Using Ruby-Laser Scattering Diagnostics

Local measurements of impulse breakdown plasmas in an atmospheric air using ruby-laser scattering revealed that pressure as high as 12 atm (electron density≃1.3×10^<24>m^<-3> and temperature≃3.4eV) and an electric field of 2.8×10^4 V/m were reached in the arc channel just after the beginning of the discharge (t=0.4 μsec), and that they rapidly approached respective values at DC discharge in the air. The pressure in the arc channel was found uniform across the channel radius each time, and the initial pressure in, and the expansion velocity of, the arc channel at t=0.4 μsec, were enough to cause the resulting shock-wave expansion at later times.
