Ray Tracing Analyses of Current-Free ECRH Plasmas in Heliotron E

Ray tracing calculation of both the ordinary (0) mode and the extraordinary(X) mode using the cold plasma dispersion relation were carried out for thefundamental resonance (co=a..) and the second harmonic resonance (a=2a..)in a straight-heliotron configuration, where co.. denotes electron cyclotronfrequency. Absorption coefficients are evaluated by the optical thickness alongthe ray trajectories without relativistic effects. In Heliotron E, dominant con-tribution to the heating by electromagnetic waves launched from the low fieldside is the 0-mode for aha.. and the X-mode for co=2co.., when single pathabsorption is significant and mode mixing at wall reflection is negligible. Goodheating efficiency requires adjustment of the cylotron resonance at the magneticaxis, which is consistent with the experimental data.
