Thermonuclear fusion neutron emissions of up to 3 x 10' neutrons/sec havebeen observed in Heliotron E dettterium plasmas. "Currentless plasmas" wereproduced by electron cyclotron resonance (53 GHz, 150 kW) and further heatedby hydrogen neutral beam injection (2.2 MW, H'+D"). It is found that allobserved neutron emissions have thermonuclear origin due to the absence ofhard X-ray background. Agreement between neutron and charge exchange tontemperature measurements (500 eV<7',(0)<900 eV) has been found at inter-mediate densities (1.5<o.<3 x 10" cm-'). The maximum fusion power carriedby neutrons, 1.2 mW, is about 10 ' of the absorbed neutral beam powers. Theneutrons reported in this paper are the first observation of pure thermonuclearfusion neutrons in a helical heliotron plasma confinement device.
