Study of Plasma-Surface Interaction Control by Light Atom Pellet Injection

The method using light atom pellets for controlling plasma-surface interaction is studied with taking the following advantages into consideration: (a) controlling thickness of atomic layer for coating the wall surface is convenient by choosing the size of a light atom pellet and pellet number, (b) comparison of effects of coating materials on plasma-surface interaction is relatively easy by simply changing pellet material, and (c) main surface where plasma-wall interaction strongly occurs, will be selectively coated because the pellets are injected into the usual main plasma discharge. The experimental' results on TFTR with L.i pellets are commented first, and then, the condition for the application to Heliotron E, CHS, and the superconducting helical system; LHD under construction is investigated by taking density limit into consideration. The pellet penetration is also calculated. The study gives the criterion for choosing appropriate pellet size with appropriate pellet velocity in case of the application of light atom pellets for controlling plasma-surface interaction to Heliotron E, CHS, and LHD.
