In order to extend the applicable range of laser Thomson scattering to chemically reactive plasmas, the method of approach was first classified, and criteria for applicability were established. As an example, these criteria were applied, experimentally and numerically, to the specific case of an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) in a CF$_4$ gas. Implications of the results and directions for further studies are discussed.
