Electron Spin Resonance-Computer Tomography with Field Gradient Wires inside the Cavity : Images of Alanine Dosimeters and Some Materials

A large magnetic field gradient with high linearity was obtained for electron spin resonance (ESR) imaging using sixteen straight wires inserted into a cylindrical microwave cavity of TE_<011> mode. Pentacrinus, a carbonate fossil and commercial alanine dosimeters irradiated by 30 kGy have been imaged with the magnetic field gradient intensity of 1 T/m or 2 T/m to determine the resolution of the ESR-computer tomography (CT) imaging. The distribution of radicals in a γ-and an X-irradiated alanine dosimeter has been imaged to investigate the uniformity of an alanine pellet with polystyrene and the self-attenuation effect. A piece of burned wood has been imaged to visualize the oxidation reaction.
