Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Signals in Natural and Synthetic Gypsum: An Application of ESR to the Age Estimation of Gypsum Precipitates from the San Andreas Fault

Radiation-induced defects in natural and gamma-ray-irradiated synthetic gypsums (CaSO_4・2H_2O) were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR). The study on the impurity-doped synthetic gypsum revealed that the ESR signal at g_⊥=2.008 and g_⫽=2.019 is enhanced by the presence of CO^<2->_3 and Ba^<2+> impurities. A new method for the age estimation of fault displacement using an ESR signal intensity of gypsum precipitates was proposed and applied to the San Andreas fault.
