Spin-Spin Relaxation Time of E' Centers in Neutron-Irradiated Quartz (SiO_2) and in Fault Gouge

Microwave power dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) and spin-spin relaxation times (T_2) of E'centers (an electron in an oxygen vacancy) in quartz (SiO_2) were studied for (1) grains annealed at 600℃ and irradiated by neutrons, (2) grains mechanically crushed and gamma-ray irradiated, and (3) the natural fault gouge. Spin-spin relaxation times of 29.6 μs, 10.5 μs and 17.4 μs were obtained for the above samples with the tendency of saturation behavior. E'centers in the fault gouge will be localized around dislocations introduced by faulting.
