Thermoluminescence and Electron Spin Resonance of Atomic Hydrogens in Coesite and Stishovite,High Pressure Phases of SiO_2

Thermoluminescence (TL) of coesite and stishovite has been measured after 'y-ray irradiationat room temperature from "Co. Analysis of the first TL peaks at 2O5'C indicates an activationenergy, Eg : 1.20 eV and a pre-exponential frequency factor, s : 1.3 X 10" Hz; the secondpeaks are at 24O'C and at 255'C giving FIN : l.27eV and l.32eV for coesite and stishovite,respectively. ESR lines at g : 2.002 with AL : 46 mT and ./ill : 59 mT show the same isochronalannealing behavior with the same parameters of thermal stability as those of the first TL peaks.Other F,SR lines at g : 2.002 with A3- : 50 mT and .411 : 53 mT are stable to high temperature.Atomic hydrogens, H', in densified amorphous and in crystalline parts are responsible for theESR signals and the release of trapped H' leads to recombination with a hole center emittingthe TL light.
