Decay of Switching Current in Switching of BaTiO_3 Crystal due to a-Domain Formation

BaTiO_3 single crystals are found to be fatigued through formation of many thin a-domains by repetitive switching at applied flelds from 3 to 6 kV/cm. The thickness of the a-domains is of the order of 10^<-4>cm. The origin of the a-domain formation is heat generation by switching and the consequent strains in the crystal. The fatigue increases with increasing switching frequency and with increasing temperature of the crystal. This is explained by the heat generation together with the way the tetragonal deformation of the crystal depends on temperature. Decrease in switched charge is approximately 40% of the initial amount for 10kc/s at room temperature. Details of switching current pulses suggest that there are residual opposite domains to which the most part of the switching current in early stages is attributed and that wall motion is almost completely hindered by the a-domains formed.
