On the Tunneling Motions of Proton and Deuteron in KDP and DKDP

In order to know the tunneling motions in KDP and DKDP more quantita-lively, the barrier height and the energy levels for proton and deuteron wereinvestigated using a simple double square well potential. The calculation showsthat the tunneling frequency for deuteron is about a fifth of that for proton,which agrees well with our experimental result. The energy differences betweenthe ground state and the first excited state in KDP and DKDP have good corre-spondences to the infrared absorption lines. The barrier height was estimatedto be higher than 0.1 eV and maybe about 0.2 eV. This height is fairly higherthan that estimated from a few experimental results. It was shown that the dielec-tric relaxation experimentally observed for DKDP could be explained favourablyby considering an overdamped oscillatiorn of soft mode which was closely relatedwith the tunneling motion of deuteron.
