Effects of Light Quality on Formation of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid, Phycoerythrin and Chlorophyll in Cryptomonas sp. Cells Collected from the Subsurface Chlorophyll Layer

Phycoerythrin obtained from the cells of Cryptomonas sp. (Cryptophyceae) which had been isolated from the subsurface chlorophyll layer in the western Pacific Ocean showed peaks in absorption and fluorescence spectra at 545 and 586 nm, respectively. The rate of photosynthetic O_2 evolution under green light was higher than those under blue and red light. The rate of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) accumulation in the presence of levulinic acid was higher under green light than under blue and red light. The effects of light quality on the rates of O_2 evolution and ALA formation closely resembled each other. On the other hand, the formation of phycoerythrin and ALA was suppressed during growth under blue light. Possible effects of light quality on the formation of photosynthetic pigments in Cryptomonas sp. were discussed.
