Light activation of pyruvate, phosphate dikinase was investigated using leaf discs of dark pretreated maize (Zea mays L. var. Golden Gross Bantam) leaves. The action spectrum resembled the absorption spectrum of the leaf, having two peaks at 436 and 671 nm and a minimum at 503 nm. This similarity suggests involvement of chlorophyll in the light activation as a photoreceptor. Light activation was markedly inhibited by 3-(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea, We thus inferred that activation of the enzyme was closely correlated to the photosynthetic electron transport system.
