Release of Carbonic Anhydrase from the Cell Surface of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii by Trypsin

Treatment with trypsin of Chlamydolnonas reinhardtii cells grown in ordinary air (low-CO_2 cells) caused almost complete release of carbonic anhydrase (CA) into the suspending medium, but did not affect the shape and kinesis of the cells. These results indicate that most of the CA exists on the cell surface of low-CO_2 cells. The released CA has the same molecular weight, specific activity and susceptibility to various CA inhibitors as that purified from non-treated low-CO_2 cells.
