The contents of photosystem I and photosystem II reaction centers, cytochrome c-553, cytochrome c-550, cytochrome f, cytochrome b-559, cytochrome b-563, plastoquinone and vitamin K_1 In the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. were determined. About three photosystem I reaction centers were present for each photosystem II reaction center. The amounts of cytochromes functioning between the two photosystems were approximately half those of the photosystem I reaction center. Plastocyanin was not detected, while plastoquinone and vitamin K_1 were present in excess of other electron carriers and reaction centers. The results indicate the importance of plastoquinone and cytochrome c-553 for cooperation of the two reaction centers through electron transport.
