Availability of Substituent Entropy Constants σ_<s°> and Descriptor μ^2/α as Predictors of Relative Retention Values on Gas-Liquid Chromatography of Substituted Propane and Butane Derivatives

Under apolar conditions, the logarithm of the relative retention values log γ of substituted n-propane n-butane derivatives can be expressed by a linear combination of the substituent entropy constant σ_<2°> and descriptor μ^2/α. There seems to be a clear physical basis for this result in terms of the enthalpy of dissolution, ΔH^°_s.
