Ti:LiNbO_3 Optical Modulators for 40 Gb/s operation

High speed Ti:LiNbO_3 optical modulators are being developed. Further improvement of the bandwidth of the fully connectorized modulators is needed in achieving very high speed communication systems (for example, 40G) in near future. In our previous work, we reduced some of the major factors of the microwave attenuation (the strip line conductor loss, loss due to higher order mode propagation, loss due to strip line blends and tapers, impedance mismatch loss etc.) to a large extent. We found that the loss due to mounting package (connector, design of the chip feeder part, contact between them and grounding), is a major factor which limits the bandwidth further. We reduced these factors to a large extent and realized optical modulators (32GHz-5.3V). We further reduced the total microwave attenuation and report in this paper the results of a fully connectorized Ti:LiNbO_3 optical modulators, with bandwidths of 32 GHz and 26 GHz and DC driving voltages of 4.3 V and 3.3 V respectively at 1.552 μm.
