Photochemical Synthesis of Silver Colloids Stabilized with Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) in Alcohol-chloroform Mixing Solvent

Silver nanoparticle colloids were photochemically synthesized by UV-irradiation of silver nitrate in alcohol-chloroform mixing system using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) as stabilizer. The photochemical formation process of the silver nanoparticles was investigated by UV-Vis absorption spectrum measurements. A continuous surface plasma peak evolution from 435nm to 900nm was observed and accompanied by the appearance of additional peaks at short wavelength. The spectral evolution can be attributed to the gradual formation of anisotropic silver nanoparticles, as demonstrated TEM measurements where triangle silver nanoparticles were observed. Similar photochemical phenomena were not observed for AgNO_3-PVP-alcohol mixing system and AgNO_3-alcohol-chloroform mixing system, where chloroform and PVP is absent, respectively. A photochemical reaction mechanism is here proposed in which the solvent of chloroform plays an important role. Chloroform, a photosensitive molecule of CHCl_3, released Cl^- ions under UV-irradiation, followed by formation of AgCl clusters as reactive intermediate which were degraded photochemically and induced the growth of anisotropic silver nanoparticles.
