The ICR-derived hereditary nephrotic mice (LCGN) strain was created in the National Institute of infectious Diseases, and is considered to be a good model for the human idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Proteinuria, hypoproteinemia and anasarca are notable in the ICGN mice, and the dysfunction of the kidneys eventually leads to death as a result of chronic renal disorder (CRD). It is clinically reported that anemia is a subsequent symptom of chronic renal dysfunction. With the deterioration of renal function measured by the Creatinine value (Cre), ICGN mice developed marked anemia. To determine the character of anemia in ICGN mice, we classified ICGN mice into two classes, the progressing stage and the progressed stage, according to the statistically compiled Cre in the serum. The ICGN mice showed significantly decreased hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and red blood cell count, compared to the control ICR mice. Although the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) was decreased significantly in the ICGN mice of the progressed stage, the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) remained unchanged between the ICR mice and the ICGN mice. These values indicates that the anemia in ICGN mice is generally normochromic and normocytic.
