The effect of temperature on the values of the biokinetic constants, viz. the growth yield constant, Y, the microbial decay constant, b, the maximum specific substrate removal rate, k, the modified Michaelis-Menten constant, [K_m], and the gas kinetic constants, a and a', was investigated to determine the roles of activation energy and temperature coefficient in the thermal regulation of the anaerobic digestion of synthetic night soil at different sludge retention times.The results showed that the activation energy determined from all the kinetic constants ranged from 6,800 cal/mol to 27,900 cal/mol in the temperature range of 25-33℃. The temperature coefficient determined from the same constants ranged from 1.05 to 1.19 in the same temperature range. Conversely, the activation energies obtained from all kinetic constants for temperature range of 35-53℃ were all negative and it was inferred that the microbial cultures in these systems were unable to cope and get acclimated with the thermal demand imposed on them.
