The effect of temperature, particularly in the mesophilic-thermophilic range, on the acclimation of the sludge inoculum as well as the combined effect of temperature and sludge retention time (SRT) changes on the microbial growth, substrate utilization and gas production in the anaerobic digestion of synthetic night soil were investigated.The results showed that there are three distinct regions in the temperature range (25-55℃) of the acclimation of the anaerobic seed sludge to synthetic night soil substrate, viz. mesophilic phase (temperatures below 36℃), transitional phase (temperatures between 36℃ and 45℃) and thermophilic phase (temperatures beyond 45℃). The optimum sludge retention time and temperature level deemed practical and economical lie between 10-15 days and within the temperature range of 31-35℃, respectively.
