Isolation of a Bacterium Requiring Three Amino Acids for Polyvinyl Alcohol Degradation

A polyvinyl alcohol degrading bacterium was isolated from activated sludge samples. It required thiamine as a growth factor when glucose was used as a carbon source. However, it required three kinds of amino acids tyrosine or phenylalanine, isoleucine, and cystine in addition to thiamine in degrading PVA. The microorganism was similar to Pseudomonas vesicularis according to Bergey's Manual, 8th Ed., but some characteristics were different from those of P. vesicularis. Therefore, the bacterium was named Pseudomonas vesicularis var. povalolyticus PH.
