Microbial oxidation of (±)-3-halo-1,2-propanediol was studied and it was found that several microorganisms accumulated (R)-3-halolactic acid. Geotrichum loubieri CBS 252.61 produced the most and gave optically pure (R)-3-chlorolactic acid and(R)-3-bromolactic acid from the corresponding diols.
