The optimum conditions for production of D-β-hydroxyisobutyric acid by Candida rugosa IFO 0750 and its mutant lacking β-hydroxyisobutryrate dehydrogenase were studies. Under the favorable conditions, the parent strain produced 21.7 mg/ml of D-β-hydroxyisobutyric acid on 72 h-cultivation, but the molar yield of the β-hydroxy acid was less than 50%. The mutant lacking β-hydroxyisobutyrate dehydrogenase needed an energy source for conversion of isobutyridc acid to D-β-hydroxyisobutyric acid. The yield of D-β-hydroxyisobutyric acid from isobutyric acid by the mutant increased to approximately 96%.
