Strain NPA-1,which was derived from Candida rugosa IFO 0750 as a mutant unable to assimilate propionic acid, produced β-hydroxypropionic acid in a high yield, amounting to 40.2mg/ml from propionic acid on 75 h-cultivation. Strain NPA-1 lacked β-hydroxypropionate dehydrogenase and needed glucose as an energy source for the production of β-hydroxypropionic acid. Propyl alcohol, propionaldehyde and acrylic acid were also converted to β-hydroxypropionic acid by the mutant.
